By digitalizing contract management and streamlining global collaboration, The Hunger Project is freeing up valuable resources to advance their mission. Tasks that once took weeks are now completed in days, enabling the organization to work far more effectively.

Malin Flemström, Country Director for The Hunger Project Sweden, has seen her organization transform during her ten-year journey through various roles in fundraising, communications, and program management. As part of a global movement founded in the 1970s, The Hunger Project’s mission goes beyond charity, focusing on empowerment and sustainable solutions in 22 countries. In Sweden, the organization emphasizes fundraising, advocacy, and awareness to support these initiatives.

One of the key challenges The Hunger Project faces is shifting the mindset around hunger and aid. Sustainable change requires not only resources but also a shift in perspective. The communities they work with have often been isolated, with little exposure to alternative ways of life, leading many to believe that poverty is inescapable or even predetermined.

The Hunger Project works to shift this perspective, helping people move from feeling powerless—”I can’t”—to realizing their potential for change—”I can”—which then grows into collective empowerment—”we can.” Malin and her team work to replace outdated perceptions of charity with a belief in the potential of the people they support, highlighting the importance of equal partnerships rather than a “giver and receiver” dynamic. This mindset shift extends to their operational strategy, emphasizing collaboration and efficiency.

Finding their flow through operational hurdles

The Hunger Project’s mission comes with unique administrative demands, especially given its legal structure in Sweden. Prior to using Oneflow, managing and obtaining signatures across multiple stakeholders was a cumbersome process. For example, every contract with a funder required sign-off from three parties: the funding country, the implementing country, and The Hunger Project itself.

“We’ve streamlined our contract signing process significantly. Previously, it could take up to three weeks for all board members to sign off on documents. Now, the process is completed the day after meetings, freeing up time for us to focus on our core mission.”

The shift to Oneflow has streamlined many administrative processes, allowing The Hunger Project’s staff to work more efficiently across their 22-country network. It began with Malin’s team in Sweden, where they introduced Oneflow for internal agreements. This led to global adoption, expanding digital efficiency to the entire organization. Now, over 360 employees use Oneflow to ensure a smooth, compliant signing process, including for critical tasks such as the annual code of conduct signing and standardized fund requisition contracts.

“What did we do before Oneflow? Imagine, previously we would be running around chasing people for their signatures. One of the benefits was that we instantly saw how effective it was for us.”

Oneflow drives standardization and accessibility

Oneflow has proven invaluable in supporting global consistency, a priority for Malin and her team. With Oneflow’s standardized templates, each office follows the same fund transfer and requisition process, ensuring a streamlined and error-free system.

“It simplifies the whole chain. It’s not only about signing, it’s also about storing and getting reminded when it’s time to sign again. We also get a clearer view of the storage, who has signed and who hasn’t” says Malin.

She adds that they also appreciate the Contact Book feature, which saves time by storing frequently-used contacts and facilitating the document distribution process.

Oneflow’s user-friendliness has made onboarding smooth, even across the diverse language needs of The Hunger Project’s global network. During remote implementation sessions, countries were able to quickly understand and use the platform in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French. This adaptability has made it easier for smaller offices with limited staff to adopt standardized workflows, a significant step toward organizational cohesion.

Enhancing focus on The Hunger Project’s vision

Oneflow’s digital tools have reduced administrative burdens, offering what Malin describes as a ROE, “Return of Energy.” Rather than focusing on manual, daunting processes, The Hunger Project’s team can channel their efforts into meaningful work, such as partnering with communities to understand and address the root causes of hunger.

“Our highest cost in Sweden is staff costs. It comes back to ‘what do we put our time into?’, because obviously time is money—time is money for everyone. So I think that in the long run we will see that just by having more and more automated processes we will free up more time and be able to drive the mission forward”

Oneflow’s intuitive design, automated reminders, and legally compliant signatures support the foundation’s stringent standards. Another appreciated feature is being able to sign with BankID, as it helps with more restricted types of funding, like governmental contributions.

“What did we do before Oneflow? Imagine, previously we would be running around chasing people for their signatures. One of the benefits was that we instantly saw how effective it was for us”

While the implementation required initial buy-in from team members unfamiliar with digital contract tools, Oneflow quickly gained traction due to positive feedback across offices. After over a year of successful use, Malin notes that Oneflow has proven itself as the right solution for The Hunger Project’s needs.

Looking ahead

In the fight against hunger, The Hunger Project views Oneflow as more than just a tool for efficiency. It’s an enabler that allows them to focus more on their mission: building resilient communities where hunger becomes a thing of the past. By helping transform mindsets and encouraging individuals to realize their full potential, The Hunger Project promotes lasting change—change that shifts perspectives from “I can’t” to “we can.” By automating their processes they have freed up resources, simplified cross-border collaboration, and ultimately helped their employees dedicate more of their energy toward transformative, sustainable impact.
