Will AI replace my job? Find out more

When ChatGPT launched in late 2022, it’s fair to say that many people were wondering, “will AI replace my job?”. This was particularly true for people working in roles in fields like, marketing, data entry, and admin roles. But just what does AI’s place in the job market look like? Let’s take a look at that.

In this article, we’ll cover:

  1. What ChatGPT has to say
  2. Which jobs are the most vulnerable to AI?
  3. How realistic is it that AI will replace my job?

1. What ChatGPT has to say

This has been copied verbatim from a ChatGPT query:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to automate and replace jobs that involve repetitive and routine tasks. Some of the jobs that could potentially be replaced by AI in the future include:

  1. Data Entry: AI-powered software can extract data from various sources and enter it into databases without human intervention.
  2. Customer Service: AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants can handle simple queries and provide customer support without the need for human operators.
  3. Transportation and Delivery: Self-driving vehicles and drones could eventually replace human drivers and delivery personnel.
  4. Manufacturing: AI-powered robots connected to production management software can handle tasks such as assembling, painting, and packaging products in factories to produce cheap mailer boxes.
  5. Accounting and Bookkeeping: AI-powered software can automate tasks such as data entry, record-keeping, and financial analysis.
  6. Retail and Sales: AI-powered chatbots and personalized recommendations can help customers find products and make purchasing decisions.
  7. Healthcare: AI-powered software can analyze medical data, assist with diagnosis, and help healthcare professionals make treatment recommendations. In fact, AI can support specialized systems like EMR software or EHR for physical therapists, streamlining documentation and optimizing patient care.

It’s worth noting that while AI has the potential to replace some jobs, it also has the potential to create new jobs and transform existing ones. As with any technological innovation, it’s important to prepare for the potential impact on the job market and take steps to ensure a smooth transition.

2. Which jobs are the most vulnerable to AI?

It’s not only the fields ChatGPT talks about that AI could replace. A wave of automation similar to that seen in the 1970s and 80s could well be coming. In that era, lots of blue-collar jobs were lost across the industrialized world to automation.

Now, that doesn’t mean swathes of people being laid off as we saw then, but it does mean people in some industries are going to have to keep an eye out. To avoid this article being the same length as War and Peace, we’ll focus on jobs in B2B here.

  • SEO specialists – ChatGPT can find and identify keywords for any given vertical or industry. That puts SEO specialists under severe threat, especially as ChatGPT isn’t even AI software geared specifically toward marketing departments. As AI becomes more refined and targeted, SEO specialists could find their jobs replaced by AI.
  • Content writers – It’s not just those who find keywords and optimize who are at risk. It’s those who create the content too, particularly writers. That’s because AI is already at a stage where it can write fairly solid content without too much editing. Keywords do still need to be inputted manually, and it can sound robotic in places, but AI isn’t miles away from being able to write naturally. Just give it another year or two.
  • Brand specialists – AI tech is already available that can create an entire suite of brand assets in just a few clicks, and with only sparse details. The tech may still need some development, but, whether you’re a startup or just looking at rebranding, AI has already firmly established itself in the brand space.
  • SDRs – Sales professionals might not be immediately wondering, “will AI replace my job?”, but it’s certainly something that SDRs might well be contemplating in the future. AI tech that can assist sales already exists, both in prospecting and finding the best possible leads. While there’s no danger of SDRs suddenly vanishing overnight, AI could reduce the number of roles needed in any one organization as it slowly starts to automate more and more of the process.
  • Admin professionals – A lot of admin-based roles could disappear in the coming years, particularly those involving manual administrative work. A lot of these jobs have already been automated by the SaaS industry, but now the advent of AI could prove to be the final push in that direction.

As AI develops and becomes more ingrained in our everyday lives, it’s quite possible that AI’s place in the job market becomes more diverse, AI’s applications could spread elsewhere. This is why you might as well start using the power AI to write a resume with Chat GPT that will make you stand out from all other applicants.

3. How realistic is it that AI will take my job?

This question is pretty difficult to answer. It depends on your individual role, the structure of the company you work at, and, of course, the pace at which AI changes and advances. That being said, there are some things you can do if it’s worrying you.

  • Stay up-to-date with AI – By embracing the change, you can incorporate it into your day-to-day work. For example; AI could help you complete tasks more quickly and efficiently, making you indispensable to your employer.
  • Upskill – If you’ve been thinking about undertaking a new qualification or training (e.g., a Master’s degree in project management), but haven’t had the time, then AI can give you the incentive to do that. Depending on where you work, your employer may even be able to help you pay for your upskilling.
  • Focus on soft skills – It’s tempting to just think of upskilling as involving career changes or major jumps in qualifications. But soft skills are also important. They can help you communicate better with your coworkers, manage your time more effectively, and lead more compassionately and strategically.

That might not have helped you work out how realistic it is that AI will replace your job. But these are still useful ways to boost your CV and make yourself as employable as possible. And, of course, the learning process in B2B never stops, so it’s always a great idea to stay up-to-date on learning and ahead of the trends.
